The Design

Britannia carries a trident, and the Union Jack shield on the reverse side of the series named after her. The first circle around her depiction has the expression “Decus et Tutamen,” meaning “an ornament and a safeguard,” repeatedly imprinted. The outer rim, reads “BRITANNIA,” “2024,” “½ oz,” “999.9,” and “FINE GOLD,” standing for the series’ name, mintage, weight, fineness, and metal content.

For the second time, the obverse brings the effigy of the King of Britain, Charles III. Martin Jennings is the artist responsible for the King’s elegant, simple left-profile effigy. Encircling the image, read “50 POUNDS” for the denomination, “Charles III,” and “D. G. REX. F. D” for “By the grace of God, King” in Latin.

Security Features

The Royal Mint ensures the authenticity of their Britannia coins by adding security features into their design. By providing movement to the coin, the texture of the background waves changes and trning the trident turns into a padlock from a certain viewing angle.
