1/2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin (BU)

Mexican Silver Libertads have been around since 1982, and the BU Silver Libertad had its major growth phase during its second 10 years. In the 1990s, the Mexican Mint also introduced 2 oz and 5 oz silver coins, along with four smaller fractional-ounce coins. The largest of those fractional-ounce coins is the 1/2 oz silver coin.

Mexican Silver Libertads have been available from the Mexican Mint since 1991. This year marked the start of fractional-ounce Silver Libertad production, with the 1/2 oz coin introduced alongside 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz options. Just like its fractional-ounce counterpart, the 1/2 oz Silver Libertad’s record mintage came in 1992. This remains the highest as of 2023.

All of the 2023 1/2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins are available to you for purchase online in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins are packaged individually in plastic flips. The Mexican Mint’s highest reported for this weight remains 119,000 coins in 1992. Compare that to the most recent issue before 2023 and you’ll see a much different story. The 2022 coin sold just 5,555 units.

On the obverse of the 2023 Mexican Silver Libertad, you will find a vision of the Mexican coat of arms. The modern seal for Mexico depicts a golden eagle on the arm of a prickly pear cactus as it battles a serpent that it has locked in its beak and talons. There is a wreath of oak and laurel beneath the eagle.

The reverse side of 2023 1/2 oz Silver Libertads comes with a vision of Winged Victory. The symbol of Mexican independence, she is based on the goddess Victoria, or Nike, and is shown at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column in this design.
